Glossary: Common Cyber Security Terms

These definitions appear often in course material and interviews.

  • Phishing: A fraudulent message, usually email, SMS or WhatsApp, that tricks a person into revealing credentials, paying money or installing malware.
  • Ransomware: Malware that encrypts files and demands payment for the key; modern variants also steal data first to threaten publication.
  • MFA: Multi-factor authentication adds a second proof, such as an app code or hardware key, so that a stolen password alone cannot open an account.
  • SIEM: A platform that collects logs from many systems, correlates events and raises alerts for analysts to investigate.
  • EDR: Endpoint detection and response software that records activity on laptops and servers and helps contain compromised machines.
  • VPN: An encrypted tunnel between a device and a network, used for secure remote access.
  • Firewall: A control that allows or blocks network traffic according to rules about source, destination, port or application.
  • Zero-day: A vulnerability that the vendor does not yet know about or has not yet patched, making it especially dangerous.
  • Social engineering: Manipulating people, rather than breaking technology, to gain access or information.
  • Patch management: The routine of testing and installing software updates that fix known vulnerabilities.
  • Encryption: Scrambling data with a key so that only authorised parties can read it, in storage or in transit.
  • 3-2-1 backup: Keep three copies of data on two different media with one copy offline or off-site, so that ransomware cannot destroy every copy.
  • Least privilege: Giving each user or system only the access needed for the job, limiting damage if an account is compromised.
  • DDoS: A distributed denial-of-service attack that floods a service with traffic until legitimate users cannot reach it.
  • Vulnerability assessment: A systematic scan and review that lists weaknesses and ranks them by severity.
  • Penetration test: An authorised simulated attack that tries to exploit weaknesses and proves their business impact.
  • Incident response: The organised process of detecting, containing, eradicating and recovering from a security incident and learning from it.
  • Threat intelligence: Analysed information about attackers, tools and indicators that helps defenders prioritise and detect threats.
  • Sandbox: An isolated environment in which suspicious files can be run safely to observe their behaviour.
  • Botnet: A network of infected devices controlled remotely by an attacker, often used for DDoS or spam.
  • Spoofing: Disguising a sender, address or website as a trusted one, such as a forged email sender or fake caller ID.
  • Brute force: Trying many passwords or keys automatically until one works; rate limiting and MFA reduce the risk.
  • Data breach: An incident in which personal or confidential data is accessed, copied or exposed without authorisation.
  • DPDP Act: India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, which sets duties for organisations that process personal data and rights for individuals.
  • ISO 27001: An international standard for an information security management system, often required by enterprise customers.
  • CERT-In: India’s national agency for responding to cyber security incidents, which issues advisories and reporting directions.
  • Honeypot: A decoy system that attracts attackers so that defenders can observe their methods safely.
  • Credential stuffing: Using username and password pairs leaked from one site to try to log in to others, relying on password reuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cyber security?

Cyber security is the practice of protecting computers, networks, applications and data from unauthorised access, attacks and damage. It includes prevention, detection and response.

What is a cyber security course?

A cyber security course teaches how attacks work and how to defend against them, covering networking, operating systems, ethical hacking, monitoring, incident response, forensics, cloud security and compliance.

Who can join the cyber security course?

Students after 12th, graduates, working professionals and career switchers can join. No coding is needed for beginner programs.

Is cyber security a good career in India?

Yes. Demand for SOC analysts, penetration testers, cloud security engineers and compliance specialists is strong in banking, IT services, healthcare, e-commerce and government.

How much is the salary of a cyber security professional in India?

Entry roles are commonly in the 3-8 LPA range, mid-level professionals earn higher, and senior specialists and managers earn significantly more. Actual pay varies by skills, certifications, employer and city.

What is the duration of the cyber security course?

Specialised tracks take 5-12 weeks, the complete course about 5-6 months and the diploma 9-12 months.

What is the fee of the cyber security course?

It depends on the course and batch. We provide a quote after the free demo class.

Do you provide a free demo class?

Yes. Register on any page to book a free live demo.

When does the next batch start?

A new batch starts every week.

Yes, recordings are provided for revision.

Which language are classes taught in?

Hindi and English, with technical terms in English.

Do I need a powerful laptop?

A laptop with 8 GB RAM and a stable internet connection is enough.

Is coding required for cyber security?

Not for beginner and many defensive roles. Scripting becomes useful later.

What is ethical hacking?

Ethical hacking is authorised testing of systems to find and fix vulnerabilities before criminals exploit them.

Is ethical hacking legal?

Yes, when you have written permission and stay within scope. Unauthorised access is illegal under the IT Act.

What is the difference between ethical hacking and cyber security?

Cyber security is the whole field of protection; ethical hacking is the offensive testing part of it.

What is a SOC analyst?

A SOC analyst monitors security alerts, investigates suspicious activity and escalates or contains incidents.

What is VAPT?

VAPT stands for vulnerability assessment and penetration testing, a service that finds and proves security weaknesses.

Which certification should I do first?

CompTIA Security+ is a popular first choice; CEH is popular for offensive roles in India.

Does the course fee include the exam fee?

No. Exam fees are paid to the certifying body.

Do you provide placement?

Which is better for me: SOC or ethical hacking?

SOC suits people who like investigation and teamwork and has more entry-level openings; ethical hacking suits people who like testing and breaking systems. A combined foundation helps you decide.

Can I learn cyber security on my phone?

You can read and watch lessons on a phone, but hands-on labs need a laptop or desktop with enough memory.

Is there an age limit for joining?

There is no upper age limit. Younger students should check suitability with our advisor and practise only in lab environments.

Do you offer weekend batches for working professionals?

Yes. Weekend and weekday-evening batches are available, and recordings help you catch up.

What happens after I finish the course?

You receive a completion certificate, career support such as resume and mock interview feedback, and guidance on the next certification or specialisation.
